From my research i have developed a Nintendo Wii game proposal. The game is aimed at 7-15 year olds and is based around perfecting technical steps. The user interface will consist of a webcam image, a video of each of the steps and an avatar of the user. The user will follow the steps shown on the video, which will then be mimiked by the avatar. The user will also wear wireless clothing which will detect their balance, posture, and positioning to get them into good habits. The user may also perform full routines and record the screen so that she or he may return afterwards and view thier corrections instead of watching the webcam image whilst dancing.

In this artefact i wanted to prove that by constant use of the system i would create it could destroy bad-habit and through the use of repetitioon improve the users techique. I tested this out on an asemble soutenu, as it is an easy measurable technical step. The whole sequence was mid-shot so that the user could relate this image to their webcam image, the video also had all the methods tested in Artefact 3. Every day the 4 users completed the step using the video, webcam and a measuring tool so that they knew where their positioning should be.
I then took them away from the computer and asked them to perform the step without any assistance then measuring their proportions to see if the video was having any effect on them.

For ballet the cables would benefit far more from being down the legs, arms, down the spine and chest as these are the main points of movement in ballet as discussed in my personal reaearch document.

The garments could then be used to generate signal to a computer which will outline and fine tune the performance down to every detail such as balance, posture, turnout etc.

How can i use these garments in co-ordination with my project ?

The 3 garments were put into use as the dancers were made to move in the way that the garment made them feel, refering back to my written research document, audio and the way you feel has a huge impact on the way you move. I recorded the movement of the dancer by taking pictures. A session then took place where each dancer had to do a different style of dance as my video is based on ballet i observed and filmed the male dancer in his garment and made notes on alterations to the garment in regards to the way he moved.

NTU Smart Design - Development

The NTU Smart design development group are currently working towards a project that looks at how garments can produce a wireless signal through movement. The garment is still in the design process and doesn't work yet, the current stage that the project is at is concentrating on the design of the garment and how it needs to be adjusted to each style of movement. The garment has already been tested on musicians and dancers. As my project strongly links to this i am going to look at how these garments could work with my project if it became successful.

Coming across a project from the NTU Smart Design group i thought i may have found the perfect solution to my problem. The project was developing and testing garments they had made using specialist materials to enable the cables weaved through the garments to react to movement such as dancing, instrument playing etc. and then this reaction would cause something to change e.g change of lights during performance or music.
I saw this as something that could be linked very closely to my project and something that could work alongside the development.

These results show that Nintendo Wii, was the most popular console to design my game for. This would mean that i have to look into adding an additional webcam feature to the wii, and looking at the tracking tool to measue the users progress.

After having and recording a 20 minute conversation with each of the participants, i went and listened to the conversations to pick im portant opinions they had on this method. The most interesting points were:

"I found this method a lot easier than having footage of me in class edited as i could see what i was doing wrong, and was able to correct myself there and then comparing what i was doing to the video."

"It was useful to see what i was doing but i got bored,and it wasn't very fun to do"

"It would have been better if there was different video's, the same one got a bit boring and also if thre wwas something to measure if i was doing it right, i could see that i was doing it wrong but couldn't work out how."

I think through this whole experience i have discovered what its like to work for an employee. If it my was choice i wouldnt have done the navigational videos at 1 minute each and i wouldn't have done the promotional video as long as 3 minutes, but it wasn't my decision and i had to follow someone elses orders which is something i have never done while producing multimedia products. I think this experience will be invaluable and will be the same in any industry i go into. Overall i think the quick sharp shots work well as well as the speeding up at the end, and were good ways of introducing a fast moving pace. I think the video also tells the viewer everything they need to know, making the gym look fun and easy showing different types of people using the gym. Although i have my own feedback from my client i will also create a questionaire to ask members of the gym and non-members to see how successful they think the video will be . The last section of the video where the frame duration becomes shorter and shorter was a last minute decision i made as i thought the video needed a build up to the end. I think the idea worked well but because i did it so last minute it could look more proffesional. I don't hand the video to Hoofers until 26/04/10 so i have time to re-adjust this before handing them the final product.

The finished cut of the navigational video didn't vary too much from the first edit apart from adding audio and graphics but i think it was worked out well and will show people what the main gym can offer them.

I think the layout of shots works well and is in sync with my storyboards. I think matching the shots with my audio will be simple but maybe need to move some shots around to work with my voiceover. Now i have sorted the frame size out i can concentrate on fine tuning my navigational videos. These were easier to edit than the promotional video becuase the promotional video has so much in it and is being used as a marketing tool to attract members whereas the navigational videos are informative so are pretty straight forwards shots of the gym with simple voiceover.

I finally sorted the issue i had with frame sizes and got them all the same size so i could now get on with the editing process. I decided to the beginning sequence need to be at a faster pace with more cutting movement shots to aquire my desired effect. After feedback from my client, we both decided that the split screen wasn't working as square blocks but we liked the long split screen into 4 . So in this edit i made all of my split screens likethis. However i don't feel like this works still. I think i need to play around with the composition of shots in the split screens. I also need to look at the audio and how it will work with the footage.

Follwing on from my third artefact i wanted to develop the creation of a game that would allow users to copy a "learn to dance video" including all the features tested in my last artefact, at the same time as monitoring themselves on webcam. In order to do this i will have to use two seperate computer screens. One showing the video and one showing the webcam image.
This method will be tested on the four dancers that did my last artefact and then a 20 minute discussion will occur between each participant and myself to gain useful feedback

I have been trying to work out ways in which i can make all my footage the same image size as when i was shooting i accidentally shot one of my shoots in DV instead of HDV. I imported my edit into a new project in Pal DV to see if i could scale the HDV image size down however this didnt not work.I then had to re-size every clip to the same size as you can see below this worked i however then had to scale every frame as the images were to close.

My second meeting with my client to show him my first full draft, apart from the issues i am still having with frame size he said that he prefered the opening sequences and was glad i took on board the feedback he gave me last time. He said he liked the feel that the promotional video gave and thought that it would attract younger members. He said that towards the end the shots need to become shorter and sharper so the same exciting feeling that is given off at the beginning is repeated at the end. He also didn't like the graphics that i used to display the interviewees names so this is i will have to change.

For my third artefact i tested out the methods i had reserached into following my other 2 artefacts. I concentrated on 4 individuals and tested edited videos out on them to see how they reacted. I filmed four individuals and then edited the videos in four different ways to see how the pupils reacted. The ways were:

•Edited clips for self – annotation
•Edited clips with on screen annotation
•Edited clips with teachers comments
•Edited clips with slowed down/ zoomed in footage

What i found out ?

My results showed me that 3 of the dancers preffered the slowed down edit, 1 person preffered the on-screen annotation and the rest recieved zero votes.

The feedback i recieved was mainly positive as pupils said it was helpful to see the footage slowed down so that they can switch there concentration to watching the video rather than concentrating on the steps, and finally concluded that they felt if all the methods used in the videos were put together it would be much more beneficial.

- He thought it needed to be faster paced like it was shown in my storyboards, having sharper movements at the start

Today i went to hoofers to shoot the exercise i classes. I filmed :
- A spinning class

- Cardio workout

I got some really nice shots from these, especially some nice close up shots. The problem i had with this was that the class i was filming weren't actors so although i asked them to make it look fun most of them made it look like really hard work. I think in order to cancel this out i will take some shots with my actress of her smiling/having fun so it doesnt all look like such hard work.

Today was the first day of filming for my promotional video for Hoofers health club. I mainly took shots around the gym and swimming pool as well as working with my male actor. Things ran pretty smoothly and i got some good shots from it, however i personally feel that my best shots will come from the exercise classes as more people and action will be involved.

For my second artefact I decided that as my last artefact showed me that audio-visual would not be useful as a learning tool in dancing and that it would be used as an analytical tool so I decided to give 4 dance teachers and 4 dance pupils recording equipment for one week and they had to come up with 3 ways of using the camera. The reasons I had for doing this was to gain a greater understanding of how this technique can be used. The responses that I got back from this were different to what I expected, the main way that the teachers used the video was to analyse the performance of the dancers by slowing the material down or zooming in. The problems I had with this was the lack of technical ability from the teachers and pupils, it was time consuming and would be expensive. The outcome of this showed me that this may be the most appropriate way of using this equipment and most helpful to the pupils. It also showed me that this technique would have to be used an outside company to the dance school or possibly a separate department for bigger dance colleges as they would either require the knowledge of both audio-visual or dance or dance teachers would have to be trained to understand the audio-visual aspects of it. For my next artefact I am going to concentrate on how this technique could help individual students. I will film 4 individual dancers in class and then edit the material in 4 different ways:

- Edited clips of the class using on screen annotations
- Edited clips of the class using teachers comments
- Edited clips of the class altering the footage e.g. slowing down, zooming in
- Edited clips of the class for pupil to self-analyse

For my first artefact I carried out a questionnaire on 40 individuals. 10 academic pupils, 10 academic teachers, 10 dance school pupils and 10 dance school teachers ranging from the ages of 6-57. I carried the questionnaires out at a dance school, a university dance team, a performer’s college, a primary school, and a secondary school. The questionnaire asked about what learning techniques they find work and whether they think audio-visual materials could be used to assist their learning/teaching. I personally asked them these questions, giving them examples of each question as some of the participants were quite young and I wanted them to have a full understanding of what they were being asked.

The above charts showed that pupils and teachers mainly benefited from visual and kinaesthetic methods of teaching and that the use of audio-visual would be a useful technique but only within a dance environment. From this exercise I learnt:

· The different teaching methods I will need to apply to the audio-visual footage in order for it to be successful and that these methods must change depending on the age of the pupils and the subject being taught.
· Established differences between dancing and academic methods ( kinaesthetic comes natural to dance)
· Audio- visual would be useful to dancing, not really schools as academic teaching does not require a lot of physical movement therefore there is not a lot to document on video.
· For younger pupils as mainly a practise repetition tool and older pupils as a analytical tool
· Through talking to the pupils I gained a greater understanding of what techniques were need for the pupils to obtain the information and that the most successful method is to combine several techniques.
· Where the methods I want to put into place would be useful.

The first item being produced for Hoofers will be a four minute promotional video, targeting a younger audience. The video will begin fast paced to imitate the lively spirit experienced in the gym, using sharp visions of punching hands, feet etc. to excite the viewer and get their heart pumping. The use of split screen, colourful well lit shots, experimenting with compositions and focus will make the video electrifying. The video will include interviews from Hoofers clients cutting away to shots of their desirable, toned physique. The hyperlink below navigates to a promotional video for Gold’s gym the first 10 seconds of the opening scene shows a similar pace of shots to what the Hoofers video will, but the actions will be sharper. However the colours on this video are dull and the graphics poor, Hoofers setting will be well lit to create a vivid atmosphere.

To continue the fast, stimulating setting the audio will be energetic created on the music composing software Acoustica mixcraft. The track will be in the style of The Prodigy – Warrior (to listen click the link below) Dance, Pendulum – Granite.

I will make use of text throughout the video, highlighting key words during the interviews and equipment shots, as well as a voiceover throughout the whole thing.
As the intended effect is to get people to join the gym I will need to include how to join the gym and how much it will cost to join the gym showing the student rates that Hoofers offer with the same text format as the business brand using text font Tahoma.

The second product will be 5 individual videos showing a minute of each room. Each one minute video will commence with leisurely shots of the equipment in that room then fade to shots of athletes in action within the room. Using creative shots and affects to engage the viewer but keeping them simple enough so the room can be show cased clearly, using clear text and graphics on screen as a classification tool, the shots will run at a steadier pace in comparison to the promotional video.
The audio will be slightly more tranquil than the promotional video but still have a strong beat, so the viewer gives their attention to the voiceover.
The ethos of the video needs to keep with the hoofers theme as that is what the client wants. This will keep the same colour theme of white, black and red.
In both pieces graphics will be used to represent the colour themes (shown below). Red, black and white strobes will weave across the sides of the screen to introduce and take away the text on screen.

I will use two athletes in both pieces one male and one female. As the film is meant to be aimed at Students the actors will be between the ages of 20-23. They will both be wearing black, white and red non branded sports equipment to keep with the colour theme

I need to look at age ranges and how experienced the teachers are, and also how the answer vary in comparison to the subject they teach. In tutorial today we recieved feedback on our projects, i think the feedback i recieved was fair and am going to do a re-shoot of my advert as it will take such a short time to correct. Things that need to be done differently are:

- In my proposal i said that i wanted a clean white flat background, however in my filming i used a black curtain background, i needed to stick to what i had said in my proposal and seing examples of where a white background had been used i agree that it would have hugely improved my work.

- The text right at the beginning was too fast for the audience to read, and needed to be on the screen for at least three and a half seconds, even though i only had 20 seconds, it is a vital part of the message i was trying to get accross, in order to correct this a suggestion that was made was to start the actors line while the text was being shown to allow the text to be up for longer.

- The cuts to Isabellas hands and eyes were not needed instead a long shot, mid-shot, close up shot could have been used and would have also added to the intensity of the piece.

- The main issue would be that i needed to spend more time on the design process then all these problems would have been adressed earlier next time i need to allow space for test runs so that the final outcome is what i wanted.

During the editing process i have realised that my initial script was far too long to squeeze into 20 seconds. Therefore i have had to edit my footage to cut my script down, however i dont feel you get the same effect as the initial script but still gets a strong message accross.

Today i have a meeting with Zach to discuss my idea's for a piece of multimedia work for his company. My first choice would be a promotional video. As hoofers is an new modern gym i want the video to target young proffesionals. The gym has:

- Boxing studio

I wanted to start off the video upbeat and lively having close ups of fast moving feet and arms then zooming out to what the athlete was doing. e.g images of fast moving feet on a cross trainer zooming out to the full shots or fast moving hands on a punch bag zooming out to the full shot. Then after cutting to pans of the main reception and introducing the gym, telling people where it is, cut to more relaxing slow shots of the pool and the sauna.

Her most recent projects have been a documentary on a set of fraternal twins in which one had Down syndrome and one did not on which she took the role of camera woman. As i have been thinking into my project i decided it would be easier to find a UK example to use rather than Jannie, as my actor has only been in amateur performances i think it could come across cheesy if she tries to attempt an American accent. Instead i have decided to use Isabella Barwinska.

Isabella Barwinska, who at the time lived in Leytonstone, east London, was the first offender to be made to pay damages to a manufacturer of computer games.She was made to pay £16,000 after being taken to court by computer game manufacturers TopWare Interactive, who were seeking to protect their copyright.
Similar action was been launched by the music industry - the British Phonographic Industry - to stop illegal file sharing, which costs it billions each year.
It is understood that Barwinska did not file share for commercial profit or gain but to exchange with friends.

I never thought anything like this could ever happen to me. My son introduced me to Kazaa, a file sharing program; I downloaded 24 songs in 3 years.

The character i have decided to use is Jannie-Rassett. As I only have 6 weeks to complete the project I will keep it simple by only having one actor, telling her story of how she was affected by the matter.

The atmosphere I want to create is a simple, clean setting so that the subject of the issue is not distracted from. I will be filming in a studio in the Waverly building of Nottingham Trent university, using a white background and 3 point lighting.

I want my actress to be 22-25 years of age, creating a basic character wearing simple clothes such as jeans and a vest top, with her hair scraped back and minimal make up on so that the character is easier to relate to and everyone can try to see a part of them in her with out being too extreme in anyway.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset didn't know how good she had it. Back in 2007, the Minnesota mother was the first person to be sued by the RIAA for copyright infringement to actually take the case to trial, after she was charged with downloading copyrighting songs through the p2p network, Kazaa. The Thomas-Rasset was found guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs and fined $10,000 for each one.totaling $240,000. Later the single mother was found guilty again and had to pay $80,000 per song. $1.9 million in all. Se told the times " There's no way they're ever going to get that. I'm a mom, limited means, so I'm not going to worry about it now."

i decided the best way to get across the point that it could happen to any one would be to use a real life case study of someone who has suffered the consequences of illegal file sharing. my idea i to have footage of a normal, regular individual with a voice over explaining what the crime was that this person committed, also explaining why is was illegal. then ending with the titles. " Think your different to this person?" " Think again, IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU"

My second idea would be to recreate an interview with an actor pretending to be one of the characters who was jailed for illegal file sharing, discussing what they did that was wrong, using the interview as a way of clearly answering all the questions outlined in the brief still ending it in the same way as above.

Another one of my ideas is for the company - Trent Dance
They hold an annual show which they require AV footage for this year the theme is time.

My idea for this would be to treat the theatre and seating area as a time machine and use the large screens in the venue to go use AV footage to go through time. Each clip before the dance needs to be 30 minutes long before each dance starts and there are 15 dabces in total . I think this idea would work well as there would be more of an outcome than a promotional video for a club.

We then rushed as Edwards guitar teacher arrived. As this was filming inside we used one back light to lift the scene. I filmed edward playing and singing. We filmed a full shot of both him and the teacher then we filmed close ups of Edwards handplaying the guitar, Edwards face while he was playing. I think my favourite shot of this was the close up of Edwards hand and i think this will work well in the Edit. We also had an interview with Edwards guitar teacher about what its like to teach Edward and how he compares to his other Student, we got some good strong answers from the interview.

when we got back to the house we decided to film the trampoline shots for our opening scene and playing with the dog and riding bikes, we did this early as we wanted the lighting to be good quality. We got some really natural shots of Edward and Diana on the trampoline and having a bike race, i think the opening shot where you will just see the faces of Edward and Diana bouncing on the trampoline will work well and attract the audience to the documentary.

Barnsdale Lodge

As we got to Barnsdale Lodge we had already visited the location so we knew exactly what we wanted to film. We filmed shots of Edward working in the kitchen including an over the shoulder shot. Watching the footage back i think these shots work quite well and i would like to see them in the final edit. We then filmed Edward walking on the property grounds using panning to follow him walking. Other footage included Edward working in the reception and then outside the hotel. I think overall we have some good footage from Barnsdale Lodge and have more than enough to put into our edit.

Edward and Diana are the twins that we are basing our documentary on. A si have only ever met Diana i thought that i would look through some photo's of the twins to try and keep a feel of their relationship, from the photos i can see that they have a close relationship and even though they are different they have a lot of similarities.

I felt as if i needed to learn more about down-syndrome to carry out the documentary successful, therefore i researched the disability on the Internet and then looked for documentaries on the same subject. The clip above is from the Documentary 'Kids with Down syndrome' I think this has helped me get a better idea of what i want our film to be as i found this Documentary quite boring as the filming of the kids is too long and all the talking is mainly facts of Down syndrome, i want more to be going off in our film.

After thinking about our idea's we have finally decided to create our documentary based around aset of twins which one was born with down syndrome and the other wasnt, investigating the differences between them. After discussing all our ideas and the research we have done we started to plan the plot of the Documentary and vital information such as:

We wanted to start the film looking at everyday life and describing Edward as a person rather than the fact that he has down syndrome but then we were advised to start off with footage of the twins so that we don't go off course. We decided that we will start the documentary with a montage of photos of Diana and Edward from when they were young topresent with a voiceover discussing their general lifes without mentioning the fact that Eddy has a disability, we are going to try and do the documentary without mentioning this fact and letting the audience work it out for themselves. The start of our documentary will be their past.
The middle of the documentary will be the main part using a split screen of the twin having individual interviews but with the same questions and seeing the difference in answers. Becuase the interview will be split screen while one twin is answering the question we will show the other doing an everday activity. Therefore the middle part of the film will be about The present.
We will then move onto looking at the futures of Diana and Ed and looking into the differences between the lifes they are about to lead to wrap the documentary up.

I think the structure of having the beginning as the past the middle as the present and the ending as the future will work quite nicely.

Today Jeanie Finlay came in to talk to us about Documentary making. Jeanie comes from nottingham but has travelled various places to work such as Japan and America. I really enjoyed the seminar, and it was really inspiring to look at her work. I like the style in which she films and was generally interesting in the topics she filmed.

Start of Year 2 - Documentary

After completing my first year of Multimedia i decided to carry on into my second year choosing the Audio Visual Pathway as this is the area i enjoyed most last year.
We have currently been set the task of creating a 4 minute documentary on a single character in groups of 5. Each group member has a specific role to play in the creation of the short movie, and i have chosen the role of Camera production, i chose this as i think it would be an interesting role to have and interests me the most.
We came up with idea's on people that we know that would interest some-one enough to watch our documentary, the idea's we came up with were:

Idea 1

The first idea we came up with was one of the girls in the group had a handy man who was retired from an police drug squad, we thought that he may have some interesting stories to tell in the documentary and we could create some re-constructions of them. After talking to him we decided that it may not be the best subject to concentrate on, and the idea kind of crumbled so we looked for a different approach to the documentary.

Idea 2

We next tried to think of an idea which was different and could relate more to one character. One of the girls in the group is a twin, her twin brother Edward was born with Down-syndrome. We saw this as being interesting subject especially the fact that these two individuals were twins, however very different. We want to look into Edward's everyday life and compare it to his twins. We would go and film a day in their house and look at all the aspects of every day life with down syndrome and how he feels that Diana was able to come to university, when he is incapable of doing so. I think so far this is my favourite idea and i think it could be made into a successful and interesting documentary.

I have been having problems importing the videos into flash , so i think i am going to have to think of alternative videos to put ion place of the videos i took at the competition, heres a video i edited of a moving tap shoe, i quite like this video, i like the old fashioned theme and the way the tap shoe looks as if its moving on its own.
